Gus Hansen experienced an amazing year on the WPT where he was the only player to make it to the closing game in three of the competitions. Gus Hansen has been seen on High Stakes Poker on GSN where he paid $400, 000 to play. You may recall one of the biggest pots in big stakes poker recorded history against Daniel Negreanu. He secured a big pot with quads against Negreanu’s full house. Gus has earned many tv poker appearances and is deemed to be one of the greatest players in the world. While wagering on online poker, a different side of Hansen has been seen. Gus frequently participates in the 200/400 NL maximum buy in of $40, 000. Hansen usually buys-in for the minimum of $16, 000 and plays very poorly. He sits there waiting for a good hand and then goes all-in. I believe Gus is an outstanding poker player but not even close to the everyday players at 200/400NL. Unless Gus is broke, he has absolutely no reason to sit at the table with the minimum buy-in.
Playing for the min takes most of the skill out of big stack poker. Hansen is assumed to be one of the greatest poker players anywhere in the world but he cannot buy in for the total amount. I think television can skew our perception of the real world sometimes. The greatest poker players in the world may be players you have won’t have heard about. Gus can be found betting on net poker on Full Tilt. He commonly plays in big stakes omaha/8 and hold’em. Gus has proven himself as a tournament player. Can he use his abilities in money games?
