Howard Lederer lived in a family of 5 in which he liked taking part in numerous card games at a young age. He found himself becoming very aggressive in these card games as he was competing against his father. After graduating from high school, Howard decided to put college on hold for a little while and relocated to New York City to compete in some serious chess. While competing in chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the rear of the room. Howard’s initial 2 years were rough as he would play many hours and do not win most times. He made some additional money by becoming an assistant for the poker players. He theorized he might better his game by balancing his life outside of poker. He brought about an attempt to get more sleep and focus more on poker.
The actual improvement in his skills began when he started betting at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best players would often wager against each other. Howard had access into several of the best players in chess. With their help, Howard would hone his cunning thinking abilities. Howard used these strategic ideas in the game of No-Limit holdem.
Howard also helped his sister Annie Duke master poker. Annie was an excellent student of the game as she would always be asking questions about the right way to make the correct choice. Howard Lederer told Annie Duke to move out to Sin City and play in the World Series of Poker tournaments. She is one of the strongest female players the poker arena today. Howard moved to Las Vegas in Nineteen Ninety Three and competed in money games for the subsequent decade. When the WPT gained popularity, he made the decision to compete in more tournaments.
