Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most complex but well-loved poker variations. It is a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for action from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once invisible game, has increased in acceptance so quickly.

Omaha hi/lo begins like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to each player. A sequence of betting follows in which players can bet, check, or fold. 3 cards are handed out, this is called the flop. Another round of wagering ensues. After all the gamblers have either called or dropped out, a further card is flipped on the turn. an additional round of betting follows at which point the river card is revealed. The gamblers must attempt to put together the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is where many players can get baffled. Contrasted to Texas Holdem, in which the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha Hi-Lo the player must use exactly 3 cards from the board, and precisely 2 cards from their hand. No more, no less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is just how it sounds. It is the best possible hand out of everyone’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It is the same concept in nearly every poker game.

The low hand is more complicated, but really free’s up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that could be put together, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The low hand wins half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there is no lower hand presented, the higher hand takes the whole pot.

It may seem difficult at the outset, following a couple of hands you will be able to get the basic nuances of the game with ease. Seeing as you have players betting for the low and wagering for the high, and since such a large number of cards are being used at the same time, Omaha Hi-Lo offers an exciting assortment of betting possibilities and owing to the fact that you have several players shooting for the high, as well as many trying for the low. If you enjoy a game with a lot of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to compete in Omaha/8.
